Buying foods in bulk, storing them in buckets, and eating them for dinner has blessed our little family to be healthier and save grocery money. I’ve watched people all around me accumulate food storage only to leave it in buckets in the basement until the food grew too old or it was time for a move. So, I thought, there must be a better way.
Over time the system has evolved but this is where we are now:
We have 6 gallon buckets with gamma lids(the spinning lids you can pickup online or at emergency essentials).
Each bucket is filled with a healthy item we enjoy that stores well enough. Here’s my current bucket load:
Quinoa (one of my favorites, referred to as the “super grain” because it’s a complete protein)
Oat Groats(makes my kid’s favorite breakfast, sprouted oat groats)
Wheat (or for those with wheat allergies: spelt or kamut)
Millet(a versatile alkaline grain)
7 Grain (a mix of a variety of the above grains in their whole form)

the not as long lasting:
Brown rice (1 only buy a 25 lb bag at a time, because it is best fresh within the first 3 months)
6 Grain (this is rye, wheat, oat, and other grain flakes with sunflower seeds)
Coconut (this stuff is great unsweetened and lasts well)
Raisins (I prefer golden, we also use them as our true “fruit snack” with no dyes or artificial sweeteners!)
Almonds (many have expressed concern about these keeping well outside of the fridge or freezer- I’ve had them taste fresh after being fin a bucket for up to a year)
Each of these items are purchased in bulk and then stored in these accessible buckets with any remaining going into standard buckets with standard lids. I then refill my “everyday” buckets from the standard buckets that I store in my garage. Twice a year I replenish supplies. We rotate through supplies first in, first out.
